Can anyone identify this animal?
I have 'inherited' this piece of taxidermy, but have no idea what animal it is. Does anyone have any idea? The plate has the words 'Kag-Nag. Kashmir. April 1905' written on it. Some friends think that it could be some sort of goat.

This is an Astor Markhor - a wild goat that is found in Kashmir, Pakistan, Afghanistan and parts of the southern mountainous countries north west of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The astor Markhor which is this particular sub-species has horns that are flat and open spiral. The Sulaiman sub-species has a straight tight spiral like a corkscrew while the Pirpanjal / Kashmir subspecies has less flat & more spiraled horns. They live in very steep, rugged and high mountains with cliffs and crags. |
