The swamp deer is well adapted to life on riverbanks and in swamps. Its broad hooves spread the animal's weight so that it walk over ground too soft for other ungulates of similar size. The deer's coat is chestnut brown, light yellowish underneath. By the early 1970's the swamp deer population stood at about 3500. |
