Matamata, South American turtle that has a bossed carapace resembling a piece of dead tree. The large head, which is set on a snake-like neck, is flat and triangular with small feeble jaws. It can greatly distend its throat and feeds by sucking in a huge volume of water. Length: to 40cm. Family Chelyidae; species Chelus fimbriata. |
