Flying fishes are widely distributed in tropical seas, but only one species, the Atlantic flying fish, inhabits colder northern waters. It spreads its wing-like pectoral fins to leap clear of predators and to glide to safety. Power for the leap comes from muscular movements of its hind body and tail. In some species, the pelvic fins are modified for gliding. |
