Giant pitta (Hydrornis caeruleus)
The giant pitta (Hydrornis caeruleus) is a large, elusive, ground-dwelling bird found in the forests of Southeast Asia, known for its haunting whistle. Males are characterized by a greyish head with a black eyestripe, bright blue wings and upperparts, and a yellowish-green belly. Females are generally browner with a blue rump and rufous-brown wings. This Near Threatened species inhabits primary and tall secondary forests, especially swampy areas, and is considered rare due to habitat loss. |
