The jaguar is a fierce predator that occupies the top of the food chain in its South American jungle home. The animal's dappled coat provides superb camouflage in forest vegetation, since its pattern breaks up the body's outline in the shade among the trees. Jaguars hunt jungle mammals, as well as wetland reptiles such as caimans and turtles; they do occasionally kill domestic livestock from herds. |
