First described by François Marie Daudin in 1802, these lizards were previously classified as a subspecies of Varanus exanthematicus, but have since been declared a distinct species based upon differences in hemipenal morphology. Order:	Squamata, Suborder:	Scleroglossa, Family:	Varanidae.
