Whaling debate - key species
Bryde's whale
Bryde's whales tend to live in tropical or sub-tropical seas. Their numbers are unknown, although environmental groups estimate global populations at 40,000 90,000.
Japan now catches up to 50 each year. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society says that as Bryde's whales have only recently been commercially exploited they are not considered a species under threat.
