Is this a puma or a panther?,,,,It can't be both there not even
in the same genus.....I've never heard of a black puma.....which
would be a black mountain lion.

Grinsmokey...You may not know this but a panther is also know as a
puma, mountain lion, catamount(to many to name). It depends on who
you talk to in the Americas, will depend on the name of the cat.

A panther is either a black jaguar, black leopard, or a puma
(which is also known as a cougar etc). Whether this cat is
a black jaguar or leopard, or even puma, it is hard to tell
from the photo. A black puma is possible and is a genetic
colour variation which is what also occurs in jaguars and leopards.

This picture is a Black Leopard, most probably an African
Leopard as the Asian Leopards tend to be thinner and
smaller (but that isn't easily determined from this
picture as the cat is laying down).
This most certainly isn't a mountian lion (cougar)
as there aren't any black ones as far as I have been
able to determine. Also the shape is all wrong to be
a cougar, plus you can see the spoting in the sections
of fur in the light.
And yes, I am something of an expert on Cougars
and Leopards.
