Appearance
The Northern Red-backed Vole can be identified by a reddish brown stripe of fur which runs from its head to the base of its tail. It is 14 cm in length and its tail is about 4 cm. It weighs only 24 grams.
Range & Habitat
The Northern Red-backed Vole lives form Alaska and BC across Canada to Hudson's Bay. They are commonly found in the near water and in subalpine forest.
Diet & Behaviour
The diet of the Northern Red-backed Vole includes nuts, seeds, fruits, berries, leaves and shoots, bark and roots of plants and trees, lichens, and underground fungi and insects. They are generally nocturnal animals and only come out sometimes during the day. They do not hibernate and but they live upon food collected during the summer months to get through the cold northern winters. This rodent has a habit of tunnelling through the subalpine forest floor and nesting in hollows of tree roots or short underground burrows by and turning grass into a ball-shaped nest.
