Hellbender, large aquatic salamander of east and central United States. Because it does not completely metamorphose the adults lose their gills, but lack eyelids and retain their larval teeth. The hellbender has a grey or brown, wrinkled skin. Length: up to 76cm. Family Cryptobranchidae; species Cryptobranchus alleganiensis.
