The African pitta (Pitta angolensis) is a vibrant and elusive bird, easily identified by its dazzling plumage. With a black crown and face, offset by a pale salmon-pink throat, it’s a visual delight. Mustard-yellow flanks and breast contrast vividly with its crimson red belly and undertail coverts. These striking colors make it a sought-after sight among birdwatchers, although the African pitta's shy nature often makes it difficult to spot.
In its natural habitat, which includes riparian or coastal forests, thickets, and climax miombo forests, the African pitta goes about its day foraging on the forest floor. It often scratches through leaf litter or stands perfectly still, blending seamlessly into its surroundings despite its bright coloring. Its loud, explosive calls, however, can give away its presence to the keen listener.
The African pitta is not just a resident of western Africa but also an intra-African migrant, moving between equatorial and southeastern regions. Despite its elusive behavior, its distinctive calls and vivid plumage ensure that those who do catch a glimpse of it are rewarded with an unforgettable sight.
