IBEX OR STEINBOCK.
-- These mountain dwellers are the liveliest members of the Goat Tribe. They are found in the highest regions of the European Alps, spending the day in localities above the line of perpetual snow. At night they descend to the highest woods to graze retiring at sunrise to their snowy fastnesses. They jump from crag to crag with great security and facility. They live in small herds and the picture shows them as they appear in their Alpine home. (Capra ibex.)

The Alpine ibex (Capra ibex), also known as the steinbock or bouquetin, is a species of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps. It is a sexually dimorphic species with larger male ibexes who carry larger, curved horns. Alpine ibex tend to live in steep, rough terrain above the snow line. |
