 Caption
This grubfish (also known as a sandperch, Parapercis species) is a typical companion of any curious diver that happens to create a commotion on the reef by disturbing bottom sediment or turning over rocks. The opportunistic grubfish acts as a shadow, darting from perch to perch, keeping a safe distance and observing closely. When the diver leaves the area, the grubfish swims forward, scavenging for uncovered invertebrates such as worms, or perhaps a small fish. This one is an adult, about five inches in length.
