Golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia)
The spectacular golden lion tamarin is one of the rarest of all mammals. It is on the edge of extinction in the wild, with only a few hundred animals surviving in southeast Brazil. They inhabit an area of lowland forest that has been all but destroyed by agriculture and housing. Fortunately, golden lion tamarins appear to thrive in captivity, and there are now more animals in captive breeding colonies than in their native forests. |
