Barred Rail
Common in a wide variety of habitats (wetlands, grasslands and even gardens), the
Gallirallus torquatus
(320 mm total length) is easy to see, as it forages in open areas near clumps of grass or vegetation. It is shy however and very tough to get close to. It dashes to the safety of thick grass or vegetation at the slightest hint of disturbance.
It took me a few years before I got lucky to get close to one, with the bonus of capturing it in the sweetest last light of the day. I made use of my vehicle as a very effective blind to get this individual.
