This is a Circus species. Because the other paintings seem to depict American
birds only, it's reasonable to assume that this one is American too. If so, it
would be a Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus, subspecies hudsonius). That subspecies
differs from its European counterpart by having rusty markings on the
underparts, which is consistent with the painting.
