Cactus wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus)
At 8 in. long, the cactus wren is the largest North American wren. Living in deserts and on dry hillsides, it deters predators by building its nest among the sharp spines of the cactus plant. Unlike the loud and melodious songs of some other wrens, the cactus wren's song is low-pitched, harsh and monotonous. |
