I'd say it's almost impossible to say for certain what species this is, with
only this single photo to go on.
It's almost certainly a Buteo species though; although there are a few other
genera which one might consider.
Buteo species generally show a lot of variation between different individuals.
In addition to that there are the complications of different ages - these birds
take a couple of years to reach the full adult plumage.
Lara, if you have something specific on this bird that tells you its a
Red-tailed Hawk, I'd like to hear what it is. Although I'm not familiar with
North American birds, I do own some field guides. and they mention nothing that
I can see in this photo to make the identification.
Keep in mind that we don't know where the photo comes from. This bird may be
photographed anywhere in the world.
/Robert

I personaly think it's a young bald eagle.
It has the right sort of colour on the breast, but the beak is more golden eagle-ish I think.
The breast looks like it's covered with down, and that's what leads me to think it's a young
one. |

What's wrong with you people? This bird is undoubtedly a red-tailed hawk, hands down. I have been watching and drawing hawks for over five years now and have seen thousands of red-tailed hawks, which are a common sight throughout the US. All you have to do is drive along a highway and you'll see one every few hundred feet. The telling feature for identification is the belly band. I'd be more wary about identifying it as a red tail if the picture did not show this. However, this is an excellent photo of a young red-tailed hawk and only one picture is required to ID it as such. Hey people, i'm a falconer in the UK, this is a red tail, looks like a juvenile, however the colour of its feet are a bit confusing, i think there just dirty though, they should be yellow. www.raptorexperience.net |

Red-Tailed Hawk - juvenile. If you think it's any other species please hit yourself in head with frying pan. |
