The red phalarope (called grey phalarope in Europe), Phalaropus fulicarius, is a small wader. This phalarope breeds in the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia. It is migratory, and, unusually for a wader, migrating mainly on oceanic routes and wintering at sea on tropical oceans. Order: Charadriiformes, Family: Scolopacidae, Genus: Phalaropus, Species: Phalaropus fulicarius (Linnaeus, 1758).

Distribution:
Circumpolar, on coasts of Arctic Ocean, in Alaska, Canada, W Greenland, Iceland, Bear I, Svalbard, Novaya Zemlya and C & E Siberia. Winters pelagically mainly off W South America and W & SW Africa; less numerous in America N to California and in CW Atlantic N to North Carolina. |
