American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)
The American alligator is the famous inhabitant of the Everglades - the freshwater swamps in southern Florida - although it also ranges up the east coast of the U.S.A. as far as North Carolina. When young, the American alligator catches small animals, such as snails and insects, but when fully grown, it feeds on a range creatures including catfishes, freshwater turtles and raccoons. |
