I was recently been asked to adopt a "lizard" from a friend who's son it belonged to before she lost him in an accident. I now told by my local pet store owner thatr it is a Nile Monitor. My 9 year old son who wants to be a Herpatologist, after consulting his many books and excyclopedias tells me that it is a Tagu. Can you give me any information to help me ID this new family member? Any information you have on these animals whod be very much appreciated.
My son requested that I ask how long these lizards take to fully mature. (???)
I would like to know how much these animals will weigh and if I have ghotten us in over our heads.
Help!

The Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus) is a large member of the monitor lizard family (Varanidae). Nile monitors grow to about 6 to 7 feet in length. They have muscular bodies, strong legs and powerful jaws full of sharp teeth. They also possess sharp claws used for climbing, digging, defense, or tearing at their prey. Like all monitors they have a forked tongue, which facilitates their sense of smell. |
