Southern pudu (Pudu pudu)
Timid and solitary, the southern pudu lives in the deep forests of the lower Andes. It is the smallest of all the true deer, little larger than a Jack Russell terrier. Yet in anatomy it closely resembles the red deer of Europe and Asia. As with so many deer, it has suffered from widespread and indiscriminate hunting. |
