Grassland yellowfinch
Photo made by J.S. Dunning in Suriname. The bird was captured
by me in Nickerie in 1982, when these finches had just recently
invaded Suriname (probably just before1980). By then they were
only known from the rice-fields in the west of Suriname and were
coming from Guyana. In 1982 they were already numerous in
Nickerie and had nests in grasslands and ricefields. In the year
2000 they were present in Wageningen (D.Fung), but they were also
seen in the vicinity of Paramaribo (Weg naar Zee and even in
Tourtonne, J. Luchmun). An expansion velocity of 250 km in 20
