One of the rarest of seals, the Mediterranean monk seal has vanished from the beaches where it used to breed, driven out by tourists and pollution. The few hundred pairs that remain have retreated to remote caves, where rockfalls and storms pose a constant threat to their survival. Even there the breeding females are not safe from divers. |
