Denops albofasciatus is a beetle from the family of the coloring beetles (Cleridae). The rare species feeds on insects living in the wood. It is strikingly colored and has an Australian doppelganger who is occasionally towed to Europe. The species name albofasciatus (lat. Albofasciatus = white-banded) indicates the striking white transverse strip on the wings. The genus denops (from altgr. Δεινός, deinós, terrible and οπς ōps, appearance) plays on the large upper jaw. The species was first described by Charpentier in 1825 and placed in the genus Tillus. The genus Denops was not defined until 1829. Denops albofasciatus is common in Central and Southern Europe. The previously distinguished denops longicollis (now considered a synonym) lives in the Canary Islands. Order: Coleoptera, Suborder: Polyphaga, Family: Cleridae, Subfamily: Tillinae. |
